How Pricing Works
On TutorLingua, you set your own prices. There are no mandatory minimums or maximums — you have full control. Prices are set per service (lesson type), so you can charge different rates for different offerings.
Remember: TutorLingua charges 0% commission. The only fees are Stripe's payment processing costs (around 2.9% + £0.30 per transaction).
Setting Your Rates
- Go to Dashboard > Services
- Click on a service or create a new one
- Enter your price in the Price field
- Save your changes
Your price appears on your booking page alongside the lesson description and duration.
Benchmarking Against Market Rates
Pricing varies by language, experience, and market. Here are some typical ranges for a 60-minute lesson:
| Experience Level | Typical Range | |-----------------|---------------| | New tutor (< 1 year) | £15–25 | | Experienced (1–5 years) | £25–40 | | Expert / certified | £40–60+ | | Specialist (exam prep, business) | £45–80+ |
These are guidelines, not rules. Your rate should reflect your qualifications, demand, and the value you deliver.
Trial Lessons
Offering a trial lesson is one of the best ways to convert first-time visitors into regular students.
How to Set Up a Trial
- Create a new service called "Trial Lesson" or "Introduction Session"
- Set a shorter duration (20–30 minutes)
- Price it lower than your regular rate (or even free)
- Add a clear description: "A chance to meet, discuss your goals, and experience my teaching style"
Most successful tutors on TutorLingua offer trials at 30–50% of their regular rate.
Session Packages
Packages encourage students to commit to multiple lessons upfront. They get a discount, and you get guaranteed bookings.
Creating a Package
- Go to Dashboard > Session Packages
- Click Add Package
- Set the number of sessions and total price
- Save
Popular Package Structures
| Package | Discount | Example | |---------|----------|---------| | 5 lessons | 10% off | 5 × £30 = £135 (save £15) | | 10 lessons | 15% off | 10 × £30 = £255 (save £45) | | 20 lessons | 20% off | 20 × £30 = £480 (save £120) |
Packages are a win-win: students save money, and you secure long-term bookings.
Pricing Strategy Tips
Start Slightly Lower
If you're new to TutorLingua, start with competitive rates to build reviews. Once you have 10+ positive reviews, you can gradually increase your prices.
Raise Prices Gradually
Increase by £2–5 at a time. Existing students keep their current rate (via packages), and new students see the updated price.
Different Prices for Different Services
Consider pricing by value:
- Conversation practice — Standard rate
- Exam preparation — Premium rate (specialised knowledge)
- Business language — Premium rate (professional context)
- Group lessons — Lower per-student rate
Don't Undervalue Yourself
Charging too little can actually put students off — it signals low quality. Price confidently based on the value you provide.
